Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, apolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to three tenets: promoting patriotism, preserving American history and insuring America’s future through quality education. The Judith Robinson Chapter was founded in 1913 and serves a tri-county area in Pike, Amite and Walthall counties. The chapter, currently boasting 102 members, is divided into committees who engage in service projects supporting area schools, serving Veterans, protecting the environment, raising awareness of women’s issues and preserving historical sites.
One of the chapter’s award-winning committees is Historical Preservation, co-chaired by Sylvia Johnson and Janice Brock, both of Tylertown. Beginning in 2015, the committee restored the Joseph May Cemetery in the Sartinville community. The chapter raised over $6,000 to provide a fence and to repair and replace markers in the cemetery, including those of Revolutionary War Patriot, Joseph May, Sr.; War of 1812 veteran Joseph May, Jr.; and Confederate soldier Henry B. Badon. The committee also had the property declared an “Abandoned Historic Cemetery,” which cleared the way for assistance from the Walthall County supervisors with road and dirt work. The dedication of the cemetery was held in April 2016. Regent Susan Boyd, who worked alongside Janice and Sylvia in digging for markers and clearing gravesites and who also managed the paperwork, presided at the dedication. In 2017, the work of the Historical Preservation Committee of the Judith Robinson Chapter was named the Most Outstanding Historical Preservation Project in the state of Mississippi and advanced to win 2nd Place in the Southeastern Region of the United States. In 2019, Mississippi State Regent Cynthia McNamara honored the Joseph May cemetery restoration with the Conservation Achievement Award for outstanding efforts in Mississippi’s natural resources.
In 2018 the Historical Preservation committee embarked on the restoration of Founders Cemetery in Tylertown, Mississippi. The year-long project has raised more than $8,000, and the Judith Robinson chapter welcomes donations for completion of this worthy project. All donations are tax deductible. The dedication of Founders Cemetery is slated for September of this year.
On October 5, 2019, Judith Robinson Chapter is presenting “Phantoms of Founders: A Historical Twilight Tour” at Founders Cemetery. Chapter members and others will dress in period costumes and portray the early settlers and business owners of Tylertown buried in the historic cemetery.
As Regent of Judith Robinson Chapter, I commend the remarkable women in our chapter. Our members logged 2,844 hours in volunteer service in McComb, Summit, Magnolia, Tylertown, Osyka, Liberty and the surrounding areas during 2018. We are one of the fastest growing chapters in Mississippi and we invite inquiries regarding membership.
